Meet John Campbell

April Volunteer
of the Month
For the past two years, John Campbell has been a volunteer Greeter at AMA events. John's commitment to our association is being celebrated this month by his selection as Volunteer of the Month.
John has been an AMA Oregon member for three years. He believes that the AMA gives him the best networking and business development opportunities of any local marketing organization.
In his working life, John is VP of Operations and Senior Project Leader for Riley Research Associates, a well-known marketing and communications research firm in the Portland area. In that position, John meets with clients to understand what their market research needs are, develops questionnaires, manages the fielding operation, analyzes the results, writes reports and makes presentations of the results to the clients at the end of their projects. John has been with Riley Research Associates four years. Said another way, he's been working at Riley Research Associates since two weeks after his graduation from the University of Oregon with a degree in Sports Marketing.
John was born in Montana and grew up in Wisconsin. Today, he is married, with no children yet, and lives in Hillsboro. He spends his free time restoring and customizing a 1967 Mustang. Long term, he would like to use his education in Sports Marketing by working with professional sports teams.
Thank you John! |

President’s Message
Spring is officially here, despite the best efforts of Mother Nature to extend our rainy season and with it comes some of my favorite AMA events. After our most successful MAX awards program ever, and yet another high octane luncheon (Starbucks’ talk on corporate responsibility), we start to turn our attention towards the annual conference on May 22, Forward 08: Nontraditional Marketing goes Mainstream.
How do you stand out, then? Is it Volvo’s green racing car? The company has received a great deal of attention on YouTube recently. Perhaps it is the way Starbucks is attempting to engage their most passionate consumers with a community for them to share ideas with the company.
As Forward 08 morning keynote and author of Word of Mouth Marketing, Andy Sernovitz says, “Marketing is what you do, not what you say. The story that will be told by the power of word of mouth is what really happens underneath all that marketing.” How then, do you leverage this conversation? Andy will share lessons from his 18 years of experience in the space, including work with top global brands such as TiVo and Ralph Lauren.
During the afternoon, we focus on lessons from LinkedIn, and their growth from startup to more than 20 million registered users in just over 5 years. Our afternoon keynote, Mrinal Desai, former VP of Business Development at LinkedIn and founder of Crossloop will share the LinkedIn story of growth, as well as how to effectively utilize the nontraditional marketing tools available to you to grow your business.
I look forward to seeing all of you at AMA’s Forward 08. I also hope you’ll take advantage of the great opportunities at this year’s Innotech, and join us for our luncheon on April 17th with Ogilvy’s Rohit Bhargava, Senior Vice President, Digital Strategy & Marketing, part of Innotech’s eMarketing Summit.
Although the weather outside may not be complying, the AMA programming schedule is indeed heating up and I hope you’ll join us.
Best –

April Luncheon
Thursday, April 17, 2008
Invitation: 10 Truths of Marketing In A Web2.0 World
Rohit Bhargava, Senior Vice President,
Digital Strategy at Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide
Thursday, April 17, Oregon Convention Center
11:30am – 12:00pm - Networking
12:00pm – 1:30pm - Presentation
One of the effects of the shift from Web1.0 (webpages) to Web2.0 (people) is that individuals are using the Internet in completely new ways. The old methods for marketing to consumers online or offline don't work anymore because consumers are smarter about filtering them out using technology like RSS and sites like Digg, Flickr and YouTube. Great brands need personality to stand out.
In this session, Rohit Bhargava, Senior Vice President, Digital Strategy at Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide, Author of Personality Not Included, a guide for brands to connect more authentically with their customers, and the Influential Marketing Blog, will teach you how to decode the acronyms of social media and learn the new rules for marketing in a Web2.O world. Whether you have a small business struggling to be seen, or you are part of a large enterprise trying to create its own online social network or wiki - this session will teach you the new secrets for how to make your marketing a more powerful force.
AMA-Oregon Chapter members are asked to use the link below to access the eMarketing Summit Lunch-only registration.
Pricing:
The lunch-only registration option is for AMA members ($32.00 pp) and this registration link is only accessible through the AMA site (not on the InnoTech site).
Cost is $149 for the entire two day InnoTech summit, including lunch, featured breakfast presentation on April 17, exhibiting and receptions.

Annual AMA Oregon Conference
Nontraditional Marketing Goes Mainstream
Amidst the cacophony of 5,000 messages a day screaming at every consumer, what does it take to be heard? To be meaningful. Memorable. Resonant.
Some might say it’s the quiet voice, the one that you didn’t expect to hear. The voice that speaks to you, not at you. That speaks to the part of you that still believes that even a business can kick through the box and inspire.
At Forward 08, you’ll hear from Andy Sernovitz on how to turn one voice into a sea of harmonious voices; Mrinal Desai- who will share how what started out as a whisper at LinkedIn turned into a fervent roar; and panelists who disassembled, reinvented (with duct-tape), broke free from and skateboarded over the box. As you leave the conference, ask yourself -What will you do with your box when you’re done with it?

funnelbox
Sponsor Spotlight
Platinum Sponsor Since 2006
funnelbox CEO and Creative Director, Robb Crocker, likes to talk about his company and the origins of the unusual name. The name, funnelbox, is supposed to conger to mind the idea of an organization where all creative ideas, all creative talent, and superior implementation come together in one place, that is funneled into a box. Clearly, Robb takes great pride in his talented staff. More than that, he takes pride in funnelbox's focus on meeting the client's business expectations. That's why, “No Babysitting!”, is a beacon on every page of the company's website. “No Babysitting!” means that funnelbox will perform highest quality work on schedule and on budget every time, without the need for constant oversight from the client. The company's success speaks to how important meeting business objectives, as well as creative goals, is to its clients. In fact, 90% of funnelbox's business comes from repeat customers and referrals. The company was founded June 1, 1999.

Gender Demographics and Marketing to Women
Dos & Don’ts
By Mara Woloshin
Often misunderstood, gender demographics and market segmentation serve a vital function in the marketplace. They hone data, pinpointing marketing to American’s most powerful consumers, women.
Many have described understanding demographics as magic or an art. In reality it is a simple foundation for any successful marketing effort. Demographics identifies and classifies characteristics (age, race, income, lifestyle and gender) of various population (market) segments.
The United States Congress requisitioned the first official census in 1790 consisting of six simple questions including head of household, race and gender. Thomas Jefferson and the American Philosophical Society then lobbied to expand the census to include age, birthplace and occupation for determining, "the causes which influence life and health" and "the conditions and vocations of our fellow citizens." We can thank Jefferson for creating America’s first source of marketing information.

Event Recap
Trail Blazers Member-Only Networking
By Eric Gregg, Inavero Institute and AMA Oregon President
More than 90 AMA members and guests were treated to a unique and memorable experience in March during the members-only networking event with the Trail Blazers. The event started with a candid discussion of sports marketing and the specific challenges and opportunities faced by the Trail Blazers marketing department delivered by Sarah Mensa, Senior VP of Sales and Marketing.
Sarah discussed the blending of fan communities, viral videos and living the brand values in an interactive, engaging chat. The team, playing most of the game without the services of their three biggest stars, all out with injuries, didn’t disappoint either. The Trail Blazers delivered perhaps their most complete game, beating a playoff-bound Washington Wizards team convincingly. AMA members finished off the evening showing off their free throw shooting skills, as they were granted exclusive access to the court postgame for a brief shoot around.
The Trail Blazers are truly, once again, Portland icons to be proud of, and the access and attention AMA members received at the game was first class. Make sure you don’t miss this opportunity next year; it’s definitely worth the price of admission. |
