Eric Gregg
AMA President

Our Oregon Chapter of the American Marketing Association serves marketers in a
wide variety of disciplines, from research to advertising; brand marketing to public relations.
One consistent challenge we all face is staying abreast of how technology impacts our jobs, providing both opportunity and challenge.

President’s Message

Technology is continually changing the way we reach consumers with our marketing messages. Even a mere 20 years ago, we might have been able to reach the vast majority of our target market with ads on the big 3: television, radio or newspaper. There were typically a handful of options in any of the mediums and they each reached a large percentage of the population.

Fast forward to today’s marketing environment. Just when I feel like I have taken our company’s online presence from 1.0 to 1.1, I’m told that web 2.0 is as out of style as the bright orange tie in my closet (it’s there, you can ask my wife). Web 3.0 is where the technologically savvy marketer is headed. As for the big 3? Television has been tivoed, radio is commercial free on the Internet or through satellites, and with the immediate news release of RSS, newspapers are often quite literally, yesterday’s news. While all can be effective for the right audience and the right product or service, it is clear that the savvy marketer also must have a clear understanding of how to utilize other marketing avenues.

Now, more than ever, the power is with the consumer. Technology has enabled us, as consumers, to be more selective about what marketing messages we allow and what we filter out. This places the burden on the company and the marketing it produces to be engaging, focused and delivered at a time and in a format the consumer wants.

Steve Gehlen, architect of the Internet Strategy Forum, is bringing another event to the Portland market addressing the complexity and opportunities provided by the technologies available today. Invergence 2007 will bring together thought leaders and practitioners to explore the emerging interactive convergence that affects marketers on a daily basis. It is sure to be a valuable experience for those attending, and AMA-Oregon is proud to be an association partner for the event, offering a significant discount to our membership. Click here for more information on this event.

AMA-Oregon is working hard to provide you with opportunities and resources to help you navigate these waters and I welcome any suggestions or comments on how best to deliver value in this area at egregg@iloyalty.net.

Best –
Eric Gregg

Susan Federici
AMA Newsletter Editor

In this month's newsletter is a piece from our Human Resources Chair, Erica Poff, describing a few of the leadership positions we have open in programming. Great programs are our Chapter's trademark in the professional community, and getting fresh faces will help to keep it provocative.

Editor's Note

Even though it's August, and the laziest days of summer are still ahead of us, here at the AMA things are starting to roll into action for a dynamic fall. The newsletter, for example, is introducing a new feature, Sponsor Spotlight, in this issue. The Sponsor Spotlight will appear in most of the coming year's monthly newsletters and profile one of our chapter's Platinum Sponsors. Each Spotlight will describe the type of business the sponsoring company is in, explore why the company chooses to be an AMA Platinum sponsor and offer a short case study demonstrating why the sponsor is in the forefront of its industry.

This month's Sponsor Spotlight focuses on Market Decisions Corporation, a primary market research firm with offices in Portland. I interviewed Marlene Holm, Account Executive with Market Decisions, for this month's Spotlight. Besides working for Market Decisions, Marlene is also very active within the AMA, serving as the Chapter's Research Chair. The intensity of Ms. Holm's passion for her company and her work is very clear, and very impressive, as she answered my questions.

Enjoy this Newsletter and the rest of your Summer!

Sponsorship Spotlight:
Market Decisions Corporation
Platinum Sponsor Since 2004

Market Decisions Corporation was founded in 1978 by Phillip Cartwright as a full service primary market research consulting firm. Market Decisions is passionate about creating and executing dynamic research solutions that get actionable results for their clients. With their highly customized, high-touch research solutions, Market Decisions brings clarity and understanding to their clients around the globe. THANK YOU MARKET DECISIONS CORPORATION!

The Programming Committee Needs YOU!

Our Programming Committee is looking for dedicated, energetic volunteers to help ensure that this year’s annual conference, professional development opportunities, and luncheons are outstanding. If you have any interest in getting involved in the AMA this year, please consider one of the following volunteer opportunities:

Annual Conference Chair and Committee

The conference isn’t until May, so there's plenty of time to prepare, but we need to get started soon. The first order of business is to identify the conference chair and vice chair (or co-chair) who will lead the way on this year’s event! The Chair is responsible for setting the vision for the event: the topic, the speakers, the venue, etc. The Vice Chair or Co-Chair will be in charge of the logistics of the event. (S)he will take the vision of the event and make it happen (lots of event planning details). If you’re ready to make a significant volunteer commitment that results in an exceptional event, this is the perfect opportunity.

The Chair and Vice Chair can’t do it alone. We’re also looking for Conference committee members to help make sure the conference blows people away. The job duties here are mid-level – if you’re interested in having a big impact but don’t want to be the lead, join the team!

Professional Development Co-Chair

The Professional Development series will be held quarterly this year, instead of monthly. Events will be on Tuesday nights at the EcoTrust bulding in the Pearl. We have a chair for this committee, but we're seeking a co-chair to help tackle the responsibilities. Duties are mid-level and include securing speakers, working out logistics with the venue and ordering food for the event.

Programming Vice Chair

Our Programming Chair needs a partner to drive the Programming committees (Luncheons, Professional Development, Conference, Networking, and Special Events). The purpose of this role is to keep in touch with all of the individual committees and ensure that we are on goal and meeting our deadlines, and to attend events when the chair cannot. Duties of this high-level role will include periodically meeting with different committees, stepping in to help certain committee chairs when they need some support, helping to find speakers, etc.

Please contact Erica Poff, Human Resources Chair AMA, at erica@synotac.com if you are interested in getting involved.
