Volunteers of the Month
Jan'ee Cazier & Alice Bronnert

As our luncheon co-chairs, Jan'ee and Alice have been responsible for working with our programming director to develop spectacular luncheons - both in content and flow - month after month. They're doing an outstanding job and we thank them!
Both Jan'ee and Alice are relatively new to Portland as well as to the AMA. They each say they chose to get involved as volunteers in order to build a deeper connection to their new professional community, meet people, and improve their professional skills.
Jan'ee is a communications specialist for Con-way Enterprise Services and her volunteerism doesn't stop with the AMA. In her free time she also supports White Bird Dance Company.
Alice is a Senior Project Manager for Doxus, a market strategies company, and is involved in Portland's music community.

Thank you Jan'ee & Alice!

Marketing that creates only awareness is marketing which is not optimized.  In the “prove it” era of marketing in which we live, we must show sales directly attributable to our marketing efforts.

President’s Message

Happy New Year!

As is the case each January, I have started to frequent the gym a bit more often than in previous months, certain this is the year when my physique is more defined by time at the gym and less by comparisons to a life sized weeble-wobble.  It turns out I’m not alone.  According to Wikipedia, 24 Hour Fitness has nearly 400 clubs and more than 3 million members, most of whom appear to be fighting me for time on the eliptical at 6PM every day.  With ample time on the less popular Stairmaster, the marketing geek in me can’t help but be impressed with what 24 Hour Fitness has accomplished through marketing in the past 3 years.

It seems that we have precious few marketers who are pushing us to utilize both traditional AND nontraditional marketing techniques in the way that has been so successful for 24 Hour Fitness.  With their sponsorship of The Biggest Loser, a weight-loss reality show, they provide wide-spread, prime time imagery into their brand and their product.  But as our February Luncheon speaker preaches, that isn’t enough.  Marketing that creates only awareness is marketing which is not optimized.  In the “prove it” era of marketing in which we live, we must show sales directly attributable to our marketing efforts.  While the sponsorship of The Biggest Loser is bolstered by traditional advertising, they have also done a wonderful job of weaving nontraditional and community-driven elements, such as a Biggest Loser Club where you can lose weight alongside the current cast, or their million pound challenge for the entire nation.  Blogs, paid search and SEO tactics round out an integrated campaign that helps them hold market share against their competitors.  It all comes full circle in the clubs themselves, which tie together the different elements of the campaign to both increase membership, and also up sell those of us who have already joined.

Never has it been more important to truly understand and optimize the fundamentals of marketing, and yet, never has there been more rapid innovation affecting how we achieve those marketing and business goals.  Our ultimate success will, I think, hinge on the ability to understand both the legacy and the future within the field of marketing.

Best –
Eric Gregg

Susan Federici
AMA Newsletter Editor

Eddie Ong, President of our Portland State University collegiate chapter, sent in an announcement for a golf tournament they are sponsoring in March at Pumpkin Ridge.  This is the first time I've been able to offer news from our collegiate outreach activities.

Editor's Note

The holidays are over. As I sit here in the reflected glory of the Oriental red amaryllis I started in November,  I feel invigorated for what's coming.
As this year's Newsletter Editor, my chief goal is to bring into the light the breath and depth of all of AMA Oregon's activities.  With this in mind, I'd like to draw your attention to something new this month.  Eddie Ong, President of our Portland State University collegiate chapter, sent in an announcement for a golf tournament they are sponsoring in March at Pumpkin Ridge.  This is the first time I've been able to offer news from our collegiate outreach activities.  We have a collegiate chapter at Oregon State University in Corvallis, too.
The January 2008 Newsletter also carries a short Volunteers of the Month feature, our second this year.  The Sponsor Spotlight is a another new feature this year.   This month the focus is on eROI, a young, and very energetic, creative company in Portland.

It is half way through the AMA's 2007-2008 program year now and I am interested in learning how to better shape the Newsletter for the coming six months.  Can I persuade you to tell me your thoughts and ideas by dropping me a line at: susan@federicibusiness.com

One common mistake businesses make is operating under the assumption that sales and marketing are two separate functions when, in fact, they are really part of a continuum. If the primary goal of a business is profitable sales, then the primary goal of marketing should be to accelerate sales. If done right, marketing will increase awareness, build positive brand associations, generate customer loyalty and all the rest. But first and foremost, marketing is about sales.

Sponsorship Spotlight: eROI
Sponsor Since 2004

The January Sponsorship Spotlight shines on eROI, a leading email and interactive agency based in Portland.  eROI was founded five years ago by Ryan Buchanan, who is still with the company as CEO.

While there are other email and interactive agencies that offer compelling design and innovative software, eROI is distinguished in this regard by their customer focus.  eROI takes special pride in empowering their clients to get the most out of the company's online software tools.  Their online software tools span the range from email marketing to e-commerce, event registration, CMS and blog platforms.
eROI has been supporting the AMA for more than four years.  The company chooses to sponsor at the Platinum level because the AMA is the center of client-side marketers in Portland.  In return, eROI expects its awareness and marketing love will grow.

Some of eROI's notable clients have been: HBO, SEGA, Kettle Foods, Travelocity, Wacom, Microsoft, Ogilvy, ABC/Disney and OHSU.  Please click on the link below to read about an especially successful project for Wacom.
